Tembusu Tuesdays Alumni Reunion: Salima

The Tembusu Tuesdays interview series aims to reconnect Tembusu with its alumni by learning about their current endeavours and having them share their wealth of experience with current Tembusians.

How did you find your experiences living here in Tembusu?

Being in Tembusu was one of the best experiences of my life. It was a vibrant, exciting and supportive community, and I loved being part of it.

What are you doing now?

I’m a performer and songwriter. I perform and write songs under the stage name Sasha M. My style is kind of pop but edgy and with attitude, drawing from musical influences like Linkin Park and Rihanna. I’m currently independently working on my song demos and looking to get them recorded and produced for eventual release. I am currently speaking with a few producers (at the moment all from Singapore – support local!) about getting my songs produced, so there may be some exciting things to look out for! Hopefully all goes well!

How has Tembusu life/education helped in your University life or career?

Tembusu has definitely been really encouraging of my musical and artistic pursuits, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the confidence boost that gave me.

What do you think are some things that undergraduates in Tembusu should do in order to have a balanced university life, or to help them prepare for their future career?

Get to know as many people as possible and learn about all the interesting things they’re doing. Tembusians are so diverse and it’s eye-opening just to speak to the people around you. Also, connections are important!

Would you have any advice for current students in Tembusu?

Get involved in a few things. Take pride in being in the College and represent it. You give to Tembusu, but Tembusu also gives back.

What do you miss most about Tembusu?

The open-mindedness of the community, creativity and curiosity to try so many different things, and the energy and enthusiasm of the people around me is something I truly miss.

If you could do everything again, what would you change?

Maybe I would have joined earlier! I only joined in Year 3. But well, everything happens for a reason 🙂

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

My latest song is called Inner City, which I performed recently, and got some great feedback for. The demo for this song and others can be found on my Soundcloud. The song is inspired by the game world of Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (which I’m playing at the moment), and my general love for roleplaying games and dark fantasy worlds. People have been reminded of different TV shows etc when listening to the song, which I think is pretty cool.
