To the first-year and exchange students, welcome to the Home of Possibilities! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tembusu College offers many opportunities and experiences to look forward to. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relish the prospect of \u00a0interacting with people from all walks of life. From hosting a record number of 92 guests for teas, making it to the news for our letter to the future Prime Minister, to even welcoming the President of the Republic to dine with us over dinner, the last Academic Year has been nothing short of possibilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless of faculty, department, or major, being a member of Tembusu College is an opportunity for you to grow as an individual while discovering more about yourself and those around you \u2013 and doing so within a community that is itself always evolving. At Tembusu, you will discover a global community finding strength in diversity, developing interdisciplinary collaboration, and living in harmony; a place where learning is not defined by classroom walls or branches of knowledge; an intense yet nurturing environment to live, learn and engage. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is a space for you to freely explore your interests, venture and question the ever-changing and diverse ways of the world. There are various <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tembusu.nus.edu.sg\/education\/out-of-classroom-learning\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">out-of-classroom learning opportunities <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; and Treehouse is one of them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treehouse is Tembusu College\u2019s online student journal. Tembusu students write, edit and manage the publication. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We cover the happenings in the college, feature profiles of professors and students who have done interesting and exciting things, and publish feature articles and opinion pieces on topics relating to Tembusu, or that Tembusuians are interested in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last Academic Year, our coverage of events in the College spanned r<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eportage and reflection on dialogues with politicians (such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tembusu.nus.edu.sg\/treehouse\/2018\/04\/activism-and-idealism\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Member of Parliament and Founder of \u00a0Animal Concerns Research &amp; Education Society Louis Ng<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tembusu.nus.edu.sg\/treehouse\/2018\/02\/the-optics-of-politics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senior Minister of State Dr Janil Puthucheary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tembusu.nus.edu.sg\/treehouse\/2017\/09\/debate-disagreement-democracy-for-a-resilient-singapore\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-Constituency Member of Parliament Leon Perera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tembusu.nus.edu.sg\/treehouse\/2017\/10\/an-evening-with-theresa-goh-the-difficulties-of-being-queer-in-the-public-spotlight\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paralympic medallist and LGBT advocate Theresa Goh<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response to a Tembusu Forum titled \u2018Will There Be Another War on the Korean Peninsula?\u2019 featuring diplomats from South Korea, the United States and Singapore, we published a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tembusu.nus.edu.sg\/treehouse\/2017\/11\/north-korea-an-overview-of-the-current-tensions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">backgrounder on the international tensions over North Korean nuclear ambitions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also published a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tembusu.nus.edu.sg\/treehouse\/2017\/11\/one-amplified-by-the-sweat-of-many-reflections-and-a-photo-essay-on-the-tembusu-house-games\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">photo essay on the Tembusu House Games<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a tongue-in-cheek <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tembusu.nus.edu.sg\/treehouse\/2017\/08\/a-two-forty-five-affair\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poem on the times our College was struck with a series of (false) fire-alarms in the wee hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We continued with our popular \u2018A Day in the Life of\u2026\u2019 series for a third run, featuring <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tembusu.nus.edu.sg\/treehouse\/2017\/10\/a-day-in-a-life-of-ernest-tan-graduate-fellow-shan-house\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shan House Graduate Fellow Ernest Tan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tembusu.nus.edu.sg\/treehouse\/2017\/11\/a-day-in-the-life-of-christine-the-dining-hall-supervisor\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dining Hall Supervisor Christine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tembusu.nus.edu.sg\/treehouse\/2017\/11\/a-day-in-a-life-of-ms-sara-kuek\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tembusu College Senior Manager Sara Kuek<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We even featured a creative take on the series, \u2018interviewing\u2019 the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tembusu.nus.edu.sg\/treehouse\/2017\/10\/a-day-in-a-life-of-the-washing-machine-dryer-and-printer\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">washing machine, dryer and printer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that are essential to the smooth running of this Residential College. Other pieces of creative writing we published included a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tembusu.nus.edu.sg\/treehouse\/2018\/02\/a-day-in-the-life-of-misty\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">photo essay on a day in the life of Misty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the pet cat of our College Master, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tembusu.nus.edu.sg\/treehouse\/2017\/10\/theatre-of-war\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">literary piece on the transition from the military to university<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We highlighted student voices, carrying a number of personal reflections on life in Tembusu College: from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tembusu.nus.edu.sg\/treehouse\/2017\/10\/the-third-year-experience\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what it feels like to be a third-year student in the College<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tembusu.nus.edu.sg\/treehouse\/2018\/01\/no-pageants-in-tembusu-great\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> beauty of not having pageants in the College<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tembusu.nus.edu.sg\/treehouse\/2018\/04\/ideas-for-a-radically-different-tembusu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suggestions to improve the College<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tembusu.nus.edu.sg\/treehouse\/2018\/04\/on-the-importance-of-alchemy-and-theory-crafting-or-a-farewell-to-my-college\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heartfelt farewell after two-years of residency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also published a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tembusu.nus.edu.sg\/treehouse\/2018\/03\/my-most-important-class-in-tembusu-college\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Letter to the Editor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from a fourth-year student reflecting on his \u2018most important class in Tembusu College\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We contributed to the national discourse on pertinent socio-political issues. We <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explored the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tembusu.nus.edu.sg\/treehouse\/2018\/04\/why-singaporean-politics-seem-more-and-more-americanised\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hidden American influences that pervade Singapore politics, and why this might be the case<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We reflected on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tembusu.nus.edu.sg\/treehouse\/2018\/03\/do-you-remember\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the act of remembering our history &#8211; do we have agency to do so, or have structural forces determined otherwise<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In light of the reserved Presidential Election, we published a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tembusu.nus.edu.sg\/treehouse\/2017\/09\/regardless-of-race-or-race-not-regarded\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commentary examining the Chinese-Malay-Indian-Others model of racial categorization and its various contradictions in its application in Singapore<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are just a selection of articles Treehouse published in the last Academic Year. As you may infer from the variety of writings we publish, diversity guides our editorial direction. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Treehouse, we bring together individuals who are excited about exploring issues and ideas, both within and beyond Tembusu College. We hope to deepen the landscape of thought in Tembusu College, by inspiring reflection and conversation among our readers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This Academic Year, besides publishing, we are looking to hold workshops on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ethics, use of evidence and legal norms in journalism. These are pertinent issues especially in this \u2018post-truth\u2019 information age. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given that our articles are published on the World Wide Web on the NUS domain with the branding of Tembusu College, this means that our articles could be seen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, at least in part, as representing the College in terms of standards of writing and research, if not particular views. Thus, we must ensure an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appropriate level of fact-checking, and equip our student writers and editors with the necessary skills. She majors in History and minors in Sociology. She is passionate about the creative freedom of stories and enjoys them in all sorts of mediums like writing, art and animation. People claim she puns too much but music puns aren\u2019t her forte.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Bryan Kwa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an arts and social sciences student majoring in Political Science. He mulls over the relationship between political institutions and the negative liberties of humans. The \u2018invisible hand\u2019 of the market fascinates him and he also ponders about the nexus between industry and political power. He dreams of upholding the fourth estate: posing hard-hitting questions to the powers that be and holding them to account.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Clarissa Cheong<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a second-year medical student with a strong interest in politics and current affairs. When she\u2019s not drowning in anatomy, she can be found dreaming of having a Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte while hiking in a chilly forest somewhere. She is obsessed with the British accent and hopes to attend Hogwarts one day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Jonathan Lee<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a second-year student from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, majoring in Political Science and minoring in Sociology. He is interested in literature, politics, language, time and memory. Some of his favourite authors include Dickens, Orwell, Ishiguro and Kundera.
