{"id":4103,"date":"2017-09-19T17:30:45","date_gmt":"2017-09-19T09:30:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tembusu.nus.edu.sg\/treehouse\/?p=4103"},"modified":"2025-09-25T14:44:35","modified_gmt":"2025-09-25T06:44:35","slug":"rip-chester-bennington","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tembusu3.nus.edu.sg\/treehouse\/2017\/09\/rip-chester-bennington\/","title":{"rendered":"RIP Chester Bennington"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chester Bennington. 1976 \u2013 2017.<\/p>\n<p>A husband, a father, and an incredible vocalist \u2013 easily one of the best in the world today, and the lead singer of my favourite band of all time, Linkin Park.<\/p>\n<p>He was the singer of my childhood \u2013 be it during the fad period of \u2018What I\u2019ve Done\u2019 and \u2018New Divide\u2019 \u2013 or the experimental period of \u2018A Thousand Suns\u2019 and \u2018Living Things\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>He was never my favourite. But I cannot imagine Linkin Park without him. Intended to be the replacement for Mark Wakefield, he was instrumental in elevating the garage band Xero to the Linkin Park we know and love today. The songs immortalised were those where his voice was most prominent. I remember watching an acapella version of \u2018Numb\u2019: the goose bumps instantly appeared, \u2018like the face inside it\u2019s right beneath my skin\u2019, like a good man once sung.<\/p>\n<p>He had the voice of an angel, and the scream of the devil. The ballads that he sang, like \u2018Shadow of The Day\u2019 or \u2018The Messenger\u2019 made the strongest of us cry. The screams, oh the screams. The legendary 16 seconds scream of \u2018Given Up\u2019. \u2018Blackout\u2019. They evoked the demons inside us.<\/p>\n<p>The songs he whispered and screamed, were therapeutic. They talk about addiction, depression, anxiety, melancholy, fear and hope for a better world \u2013 issues that was personal to Chester, but shared by many. I could not imagine myself going through the tough times without Chester\u2019s voice reminding me not to give up and give in.<\/p>\n<p>He had a funny concert routine, when he would start them wearing full on shirts, hat and sunglasses, only to wear nothing but his jeans by the 2\/3 mark of the show. His tattoos were well-known among fans. I wonder what it was like for him in his struggle, rehabilitation and relapse, in his last days suffering on his own while burning it up on stage with the rest of the band, and the audience.<\/p>\n<p>He was world-class not only in vocal but also stamina as a performer after nearly two decades in show business. He shrugged off injuries and came back stronger during concerts. And when critics doubted whether he could still scream like the old days, he delivered in packed arenas.<\/p>\n<p>My favourite memory of him? Was it when he led the crowd in the sing-along during \u2018Bleed It Out\u2019? Or when he immersed himself among fans, singing \u2018Crawling in my skin, these wounds they will not heal?\u2019 It is hard to decide.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I hope whatever wounds you had, they are now healed.
