The prognosis is clear; copper wires have grown into neural pathways. Now, we raise an eyebrow at em-dashes, and we sleuth the distinct, yet enigmatic je ne sais quoi of machine-forged syntax. As symptoms of doubt and malaise befall us, we insist that the machine may only replicate stylistic choices and place words together probabilistically. The wires know not of what they speak, only that its vernacular and cadence follow rules it has internalised from repeated exposure.
Thus, we try to prove that we, as humans, are not mechanistic. We are variable, we are random, we have the capacity to produce organically. Our thoughts are real, not a manufactured idea conjured from a conglomerate. As the line between imitation and creation becomes increasingly blurred, we reclaim our identity in negotiating the evolving frontline of this battle.
In every story you choose to tell, you reveal a human authenticity to the reader. You affirm your existence.
You prove to yourself – I’m not a robot.
As Editors-in-Chief, we welcome you to a realm where such possibilities may be realised. Ultimately, the stories we tell of ourselves will come to shape the history and spirit of Tembusu. In writing about our hopes, fears, and dreams, we lend the College a voice that will echo beyond NUS and even Singapore. Treehouse, then, must be a space open to each and every Tembusian, a nexus of thoughts and identities that reflect the unbounded potential of our Home of Possibilities. We hope you will join us in fulfilling this guiding vision.
This year, we are proud to introduce new initiatives that build upon the foundation laid by those before us. To keep Treehouse’s image fresh and relevant, we worked closely with former editors-in-chief and other talented Tembusians to reform the website reading experience. Regarding writing, we will be reintroducing physical sessions and writing challenges, initiatives we hope would give you the inspiration you need to chart your next story.
It is often said that writing is a solitary journey. But here at Treehouse, it doesn’t have to be. With you is a community of thinkers and dreamers—and us, your editors. Together we write, bringing the world to Tembusu, and Tembusu to the world.
We hope that through writing with, not for, us that you will learn more about yourself! With that, we wish you a warm welcome to Treehouse.
