The Tembusu Tuesdays interview series aims to reconnect Tembusu with its alumni by learning about their current endeavours and having them share their wealth of experience with current Tembusians.
Briefly describe your experience in Tembusu.
I was the pioneer batch of students to study and live in Tembusu College. Having spent five years with dear friends and mentors in Tembusu, I have to say it was the best part of my university life. My friends and I were fortunate to be part of many facets of college life. I was a member of Ora, Tancho and Ponya House, served in the House Committee and the College Student Committee, and also initiated a song writing project in the college. I have gotten to know many friends from different years and faculties, capping off with a wonderful year as the Graduate Fellow of Ponya House.
What are you doing now?
I am an Architectural Associate in DP Architects, the largest architectural company in Singapore. We also happen to be the Architect for Tembusu College and the whole of U-Town! I’m now working on a local integrated sports facility and a Master Plan for an area in Singapore. As it is my company’s 50th year anniversary, I’m also involved in staging a musical production to celebrate the important milestone.
How has Tembusu life/education helped in your University life or career?
The college living and learning environment really broadens our scope and help us see things from many perspectives. The approach to teaching by the Fellows cultivates a sense of curiosity and wonder for topics beyond our area of study. I also had opportunities to hone my design skills outside of the architecture studio, such as designing the Tembusu College tee and level lounges with my committee members. In today’s working environment, teams are often multi-disciplinary and diverse, and my experience in Tembusu has really shaped my appreciation and ability to work with consultants and industry partners.
What are some things that undergraduates in Tembusu should do in order to have a balanced University life or to help them prepare for their future career?
Balance is subjective so I guess everyone should just do what their heart tells them to. Don’t be swayed by trends because they come and go. At the end of the day, you’ve got to be able to look back and say, “I wouldn’t have done it in any other way!” The truth is after graduating, your career will last the rest of your life, so you’ve got to use this few years in school to really understand yourself and find your personal motivation and driver.
Do you have any advice for current students in Tembusu?
To me, Tembusu is an inclusive, open, engaging and stimulating community of people who believe we can contribute positively to the society and the world. So I hope we can keep the spirit alive!
What do you miss most about Tembusu?
Many things, but perhaps I’ll miss participating in our annual Open Day the most. It is really a magical day, once a year, that the people of the college come together as a whole and share their love for Tembusu to the public.
If you could do everything again, what would you change?
Nothing. I wouldn’t have done anything different! But…maybe spend less time in studio and more time in college? 😛
